Where do you start?

Preparing for the end of life can feel scary, overwhelming, and for some just depressing. If we say it out loud, will it jinx us? And while our rational brain knows the answer is “No”, it doesn’t make the process easier. We don’t know when the end is the end, but in preparing for it, not only does it ensure we get what we want for ourselves but it also helps our family and friends during a stressful time by removing the guesswork.

When is too early to start planning? What do you need? Where to start?

It’s never too early to start planning. There are a lot of resources out there but the first thing you should do is to fill out an AHD - Advanced Healthcare Directive or Advanced Directive. An Advanced Directive gives healthcare providers your medical decisions when you are unable to speak or make decisions for yourself.

It also allows you to assign a team of people to advocate for you based on the selections you’ve made on the AHD.

It’s important to get either two witnesses to sign the AHD or have it notarized. Some states will also allow you to file your AHD, but it’s best to give copies to people closest to you and keep a copy with you when you travel.

Below are links that allow you to take a deeper dive and explore more about Advanced Directives.
